AmbassadorsIf you are passionate about volunteering with people, and love the Zoo, this is the volunteer position for you! Ambassadors are a vital and integral part of the Zoo during our busy summer months. Volunteer Ambassadors work with the Zoo’s Guest Relations department to maximize visitor’s experiences at the Zoo, by answering visitor questions, helping them to get oriented, and by being a friendly face to welcome our guests. Ambassadors volunteer on Saturdays, Sundays, and Statutory Holidays from the May long weekend to the September long weekend. Training and orientation is provided before your first shift.Learn more here.Animal Care Related TasksInteracting with animals is a highlight for any Zoo visitor, and you can be a part of it! Animal Care Related Tasks are volunteer positions at the Zoo where you do not have direct contact with the animals, but you do have the opportunity to partake in a variety of tasks that help enrich the lives of the animals and allow guests to get more ‘up close and personal’ than they would otherwise. Special Events VolunteersSpecial Event season at the Zoo takes place primarily in the fall and winter of each year, and our events are enhanced by the enthusiasm and energy that volunteers bring to each and every event. The first major Special Event is the Zoo’s annual fundraiser – Zoogala. Traditionally held in early September, this event is a great way to increase the zoo’s profile in the community. Boo at the Zoo follows Zoogala, and it is astonishing and remarkable to see Zoo Island turn into one of the greatest Halloween events in Calgary. Aided by scary props and a real-life Haunted House, Calgary Zoo volunteers turn into ghosts, goblins, and witches at night. The concluding event of the year is Zoolights – the Zoo becomes a winter wonderland with over 2.5 million lights illuminating your way through Zoo grounds. If you are not already in the festive spirit when you get here, this great seasonal event will put you in the right frame of mind. Easter 2010 is being held on April 2nd and 3rd, 2010. Information about volunteering for Easter Eggstravaganza is now available. Please click here to access the volunteer callout. Education Volunteers (Docents)Education Volunteers (known as Docents) are here to educate our visitors. Docents participate in a wide variety of activities including leading tours, going Behind the Scenes with the animals and much more. Taxonomy, classification keys, and zoo-specific information are provided in an intense but rewarding Docent training program in the fall of each year. A commitment of 30 volunteer hours is required prior to registering for the Docent training program. For more information on becoming a Docent, please contact us at the Volunteer Resource Centre.Education Volunteers (Master Gardeners)The purpose of Master Gardeners is to promote and help develop the Botanical component of the Calgary Zoo. In order to be successful in this endeavor, Master Gardeners are provided with training that includes botany, taxonomy, ecology and conservation, as well as general knowledge about facilities found at the Calgary Zoo.Upon completion of your training, you will have the knowledge necessary to give garden tours, present “touch-tables” to the public, take part in schoolyard naturalization projects, work in the Calgary Zoo’s propagation house, educate the public in various venues, and much, much more!Apply Now |
