Advocacy and Education

Conservation Outreach acts as an advocate for endangered species and the environment, and strives to educate people on how they can help with - and be helped by - conservation actions.

Guest Speaker Presentations

CZS Head of Conservation Outreach, Kevin Strange is a well known local Calgary Naturalist and speaker. He speaks frequently to corporate meetings and conventions, service clubs, industry groups, social clubs and many others on topic relating to nature. Alberta Endangered Species Conservation Committee

CZS Head of Conservation Outreach is a member of the Provincial Endangered Species Conservation Committee. This committee reviews current research on the status of species at risk in the Province of Alberta, Canada and makes recommendations on the status of these species. The committee meets four times per year to review conservation action statements related to species at risk and review current scientific status reports. Recently, the committee recommended the status of Endangered for the Alberta population of grizzly bears and confirmed their recommended status for woodland caribou as Endangered. 8th Annual Gorilla Run

The Gorilla Run is the only running race which uses the Calgary Zoo as part of its race course. The race occurs on the Sunday following Thanksgiving each year and hosts more than 500 runners in the 15 km race. Participants are attracted to this event because of the connection to conservation. The format of the event is the 15 Km race course followed by breakfast, awards, and a presentation by CZS Conservation staff about current and future conservation initiatives. Dozens of testimonials each year reinforce the notion that connecting a competitive running event with a conservation cause is appealing to participants and makes the event unique in Calgary. Fifty percent of the proceeds from the race are donated to the Diane Fossey Gorilla Fund each year in support of mountain gorilla conservation efforts. The other half of the proceeds is donated to other conservation initiatives funded by the Calgary Zoological Society. Follow this link to the Gorilla Run for more information.

Community Based Conservation Training

Zoofari’s

Each year, dozens of people participate in this unique travel program created by the CZS Conservation Outreach and its travel partner Civilized Adventures. Participants in these programs travel to some of the most compelling nature exploration destinations on Earth and support the activities of the CZS Conservation Outreach programme at the same time.
The program is based on the premise that travellers can choose among many travel service providers to plan a trip but, if they choose a zoofari, a small portion of their trip cost is re-directed to conservation programs conducted by (or funded by) the Calgary Zoological Society.  Well over $150,000 has been directed to conservation as a result of this program.
If you are planning a trip to a nature destination, please consider choosing a trip which contributes resources back into the protection of the very places nature tourists enjoy visiting.
