The Wechiau Hippo Sanctuary, located in Ghana, West Africa, is a community run eco-tourism destination that protects hippos and other wildlife, and the local residents benefit economically too! The Sanctuary does not receive governmental support, however, the Calgary Zoo has been a strong supporter of the Sanctuary since 1999, assisting both with funding and technical support.
How to HelpSince 2005, our retail operations have been bringing in products directly from residents of the Hippo Sanctuary; directly supporting those artists and their families. These products include handmade clay hippos, seed & bead jewellery and oil paintings on canvass. These unique items are available at the North Star Gift Shop.
