Frequently Asked Questions

How do we name Kamala's paintings?

All of Kamala's paintings are named by the zookeepers and volunteers that work with her. Once our famous artist puts down her brush from painting her latest creation, the zookeepers and volunteers critique the painting and determine what they can see. Once a consensus is reached, the painting is named.

How often does Kamala paint?

Kamala paints once a week from October until the beginning of May each year. On average, she paints 40 to 50 paintings a year. Although whether she paints or not is entirely up to her.

Sessions last 10 to 20 minutes and during that time Kamala seems quite aware and proud of the particular talent she exercises and the attention she receives.

Can I watch Kamala paint?

Yes and No. The public rarely gets to witness Kamala paint her works of art. Since painting takes extreme concentration and Kamala tends to be a very friendly and out-going pachyderm, we attempt to limit as many distractions as possible when she decides to get down to work. That said, we have all of her painting sessions taped. So, when you purchase your very own Kamala painting, you can watch her paint over and over again. Recorded sessions are available only in DVD format.
