Wechiau Hippo Sanctuary:

A Community-Based Conservation Success Story

The Wechiau Hippo Sanctuary conservation initiative is aimed at providing the Wechiau area inhabitants with a source of revenue and improved quality of life while offering protection to the flora and fauna found within the designated lands. Of particular interest is the hippopotamus population resident along this stretch of river. One of only two remaining hippo populations within Ghana, the group of hippos is an important conservation priority.

The Wechiau Hippo Sanctuary:

  • Is owned and controlled by traditional leaders and community members
  • Is managed by a board with representatives from 17 communities
  • Has had no government involvement in establishment or ongoing operations
  • Receives technical advice from NCRC and the Calgary Zoo
  • Has had financial support from Calgary Zoo and partners, USAID, and Earthwatch Institute
